How Dog Names Affect Training While creativity and personal expression are both important, training your dog is the most important thing. Dogs will be able to hear their names repeatedly, and they will also learn to respond when learning commands. Veterinary behaviorists agree that dogs can recognize their names when something happens after they hear them. It can also be used as a personal identifier rather than a “cue” term. Your dog must learn to recognize her name and associate it with positive things. With lots of treats, you can help your dog recognize its name. When it looks at your smiling face, give it a treat and call her by its name. Image Credit: rokopix, Shutterstock The Sound of the Name Also Matters It also helps to think about the sounds of common commands that dogs use when choosing a name for their dog. For example, your training program could be complicated if your dog’s name sounds like a command that you may verbalize at some point. Names that have hard consonant sounds are easier for dogs to hear and differentiate their name from the noise around them. Training your pup will be easier if you make it easy for them. It may be true that names ending in a vowel are more popular with dogs. This not only allows for a variety of cute names for dogs such as Lasse, Bubba, or Nero, but it also helps dogs hear their names better. This happens because your tone changes when you say a dog’s name ending in a vowel. Your dog may not think of his name in the same way that we humans do. Dogs view their name as a sound that can be used to communicate a command. Your dog will learn to respond to your name with practice and training. Repeat Repeat Repeat Learning your dog’s name is like teaching it any other command or dog trick. This means that it takes repetition and, in many cases, some tasty treats to motivate it. Your dog will learn its new name if you repeat it often enough. And it’s important to keep it positive and fun while teaching your dog his new name. Avoid using corrective terms, as you don’t want it to associate its name with something negative. It can be fun to teach your dog its new name and it will allow you to bond with it.

Wrapping Things Up When naming your St. Bernard, it’s important to choose something you love. After all, you want to feel warm and fuzzy every time you call your dog’s name. You also want your dog to respond with joy to your name. You’ve made the right choice if it makes you smile to say it.

Your dog may not think of his name in the same way that we humans do. Dogs view their name as a sound that can be used to communicate a command. Your dog will learn to respond to your name with practice and training.

Repeat Repeat Repeat

Learning your dog’s name is like teaching it any other command or dog trick.

Wrapping Things Up

When naming your St. Bernard, it’s important to choose something you love. After all, you want to feel warm and fuzzy every time you call your dog’s name. You also want your dog to respond with joy to your name. You’ve made the right choice if it makes you smile to say it.
