The 10 Best Litterboxes for Maine Coons

We loved reviewing the Frisco High Sided Cat box, and the only thing we can complain about is that our cats are still able to kick some litter out of the pan and onto the floor.

The Frisco High Sided Cat Litter Box is our choice for the overall best litterbox for a Maine Coon cat. It’s two feet wide by 118-inches deep, so it should be large enough for your cat, and it also features 10-inch-high sides to help keep the litter in the box, with one side lower than the others that your cat can use as an entry point. It has durable plastic constructions, and the material is BPA-free and recyclable. It’s also easy to clean and wipes down easily.

2. Frisco Open Top Cat Litter Box with Rim – Best Value

The Frisco Open Top Cat Litter Box is a great choice for any cat, and the only problem with it that we experience was that the lid would pop off continuously. If you have cats that like to dig and move around a lot while they are in the box, you might have a similar problem keeping the lid on it.

3. Booda Dome Cleanstep Litter Box – Premium Choice

We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the Booda Dome Cleanstep, and our cats seemed to enjoy it as well. The only problem we had besides finding room in our home was that the stairs the lead into it take up quite a bit of space that could have increased the usable area inside.

4. Whisker World Designer Plastic | Extra Large Cat Litter Box

Check Latest PriceThe Whisker World Designer Plastic Extra large Cat Litter Box provides your cat with a 16” by 21” litter area. The sides are clear but feature an attractive etched design that will look great in any home. Since the sides are clear, it’s also a lot easier to find the little treasures that your cat leaves you. The entrance is lower, so it’s easy to get in and out.

We loved using the Whisker World litterbox, and the attractive design makes it perfect for rooms where guests might catch a glimpse of it. The plastic is hard, easy to clean, and doesn’t seem to absorb urine odors, but it is quite thin and will crack if someone were to bump it too hard with their foot.

5. PetFusion BetterBox Non-Stick Large Litter Box

Check Latest PriceThe PetFusion BetterBox Non-Stick Large Litter Box has a special non-stick coating that helps make it easier to clean and prevents the ABS plastic from absorbing the urine odor. Its large size provides your pet with a 22-inch by 18-inch area to do its business. It has round corners, so it’s easy to scoop, and the entrance is slightly lower, so it’s easier for your cat to use. It’s extremely durable and unlikely to crack or break.

The only problem we had while using the PetFusion BetterBox was that our cats could get plenty of litter outside the box because the eight-inch sides are a little too low. We also noticed signs of wear on the non-stick coating after a few weeks, which means the rest will wear off over time.

6. Pidan Igloo Cat Litter Box Enclosure With Lid

Check Latest PriceThe Pidan Igloo Cat Litter Box Enclosure With Lid is another brand the features a covered design to provide your cat with privacy and to help reduce odors. It has plenty of room and will provide your pet with a 21-inch X 21-inch to do its business. This modern design is easy to clean by lifting off the lid to expose the litter inside. It’s attractive and stands 19-inches tall, so it can control odors while providing plenty of ventilation while your cat is inside.

The downside we experienced when using the Pidan Igloo was that some of the space inside gets used up by the ramp that cleans off your cat’s feet as it exits the box, leaving less room for our Maine Coon and while our cat had enough room, it’s not yet fully grown. It is also one of the most expensive litterboxes on this list.

7. JUNSPOW Cat Litter Boxes Litter Boxes for Large Cats

Check Latest PriceThe JUNSPOW Cat Litter Boxes Litter Boxes for Large Cats is another modern design that resembles a large crate. It has a clear door in front that your cat can use to enter the box but to leave, it must exit through a hole in the ceiling, which helps cut down on the litter that ends up outside the box. The top also features perforations that help knock off litter clinging to your pet feet as it walks across. It folds up so you can take it with you, and it isn’t difficult to assemble. It provides your pet with an area of 20-inches by 16-inches, and it stands 15-inches high. It has an easy-to-pull-out tray for cleaning and is sturdy enough for your cat to rest on top.

The downside to the JUNSPOW is that while it’s easy to scoop out the box, the rest is difficult to clean. Another problem is that our plastic door kept falling off, and we could not make it secure. After a few tries, we left it off, which resulted in litter on our floor.

8. iPrimio Ultimate Stainless Steel Cat XL Litter Box

Check Latest PriceThe iPrimio Ultimate Stainless Steel Cat XL Litter Box is the first metal litterbox on our list. It provides your cat with plenty of space for turning and scratching, and it comes with a pee guard to help keep urine and cat litter inside the box. One side is lower, so it’s easy to enter, and the stainless steel won’t scratch or absorb urine odors.

We love the idea of a stainless-steel litterbox and believe it’s the way of the future. However, this model is quite thin and dents easily, and one of our pans received a dent during shipping. We also noticed rust forming on ours after a few weeks, and there is a small gap between the pan and the shield that will allow urine to get through.

9. Petmate Giant Open Top Kitty Litter Box

Check Latest PriceThe Petmate Giant Open Top Kitty Litter Box provides your cat with a huge area that should be more than suitable for your main cat. Its simple design works well to keep litter inside, and it isn’t hard to clean with no sharp corners that could trap waste. Its thick plastic construction feels sturdy and durable. It’s easy to lift and doesn’t become cumbersome when you’re dumping it into the trash.

Our biggest problem with Petmate Giant was that the plastic is somewhat soft and scratches easily. Once scratches start to form n the plastic, it starts to absorb urine odor quickly, and it’s difficult to remove. Scrubbing scratches it more and makes the problem worse. There is also no low point to make it easy to get into for older cats.

10. KittyGoHere Litter Box Senior Cat Litter Box

Check Latest PriceThe KittyGoHere Litter Box Senior Cat Litter Box is a large but short box intended to help older cats that might not be able to get in and out of the standard boxes. It stands only five inches tall and has a lowered side to let your cat walk right in. It’s also available in multiple colors, so you can choose something that goes with your decor.

Unfortunately, while we reviewed the KittyGoHere Litter Box Senior Cat Litter Box, we found it unsuitable for cats that like to dig because we had litter everywhere. We also felt that the plastic used in its construction was thin and flimsy and wouldn’t hold up well. It’s also quite soft and scratches easily and can bend as your trying to pick it up, spilling litter.

Buyer’s Guide: Selecting The Best Litterbox for Maine Coons

Let’s look at a few things you should consider before choosing the best litterbox for Maine Coon.

Size

Since the Maine Coon is such a large cat, one of the first things you want to look for is size. While many litter boxes will label themselves as large, we recommend looking at the dimensions listed on the package. You will want to choose a brand with one dimension that is at least 20 inches, though bigger is better.  We printed the dimensions for each item on our list and only chose brands that followed our size recommendation.

Litter Box Type

Covered

Covered litter boxes have a doorway that your cat can use to enter the box and a lid that will provide it with privacy while trapping odors inside. Many brands have a built-in activated charcoal filter to help absorb odors and other openings for ventilation. These boxes also do a great job of keeping the litter contained so it doesn’t end up on your floor. The downside to these boxes is that they can create an unpleasant atmosphere for your cat, similar to an outhouse which can cause your cat to refuse to use it.

We have several covered litterboxes on our list, and some of them are quite attractive. We tried to point out any models without proper ventilation, but we recommend looking up online reviews if you are thinking about purchasing a covered brand that isn’t on this list.

Uncovered

Uncovered litterboxes are much more common than the covered variety, and you can find them almost anywhere you can find cat food. Unfortunately, most brands are much too small for your Maine Coon, but you might get lucky. Uncovered litterboxes need to have high sides so the litter will stay inside, especially if your cat likes to dig. However, taller sides can make the box difficult to enter, especially if you have an older cat with arthritis. We recommend looking for a brand with one side lower than the others to make it easier to enter.

Durability

No matter which type of litter box you choose, you will need to inspect it to make sure it uses durable materials. Most of the larger litter boxes required by the Maine Coon use plastic, which can work well if it’s thick enough that it won’t crack. Softer plastic will scratch easily, which will allow bacteria to grow. It can also absorb the urine odor and continue to smell bad even after a thorough cleaning.

We recommend choosing a brand with hard plastic that won’t scratch easily. Stainless steel can also make a great choice and is becoming more popular. However, some cats may not like the feel of stainless steel if they dig to the bottom.

Cleaning

One huge advantage that uncovered litterboxes have over covered ones is that they are easier to clean. However, we recommend inspecting the shape of your litterbox to make sure there are no sharp corners or valleys that may be difficult to scoop clean. Brands that feature a simple flat design with slightly rounded corners are best.

Covered boxes are more difficult to clean because bacteria can cover a much larger surface. Many of the brands on our list are easy to disassemble, so you can thoroughly clean each part, but you will need to check the manual for your model if you choose a different brand.

If you’re over your house smelling like you’ve got a pet, it’s time to check out the Hepper Advanced Bio-Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator Spray! It removes even the most stubborn smells and stains and comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Other Tips

  • Avoid putting the litter box in a corner because closed walls can make it difficult for your pet to turn around.
  • Avoid using scented litter with a covered litterbox because the fragrance will be concentrated and can harm your cat.
  • Cleaning the litter box frequently can reduce digging.

Conclusion

When choosing your next litter box for a Maine Coon, we highly recommend our pick as the overall best litterbox for Maine Coon. The Frisco High Sided Cat Litter Box is large, extremely durable, and has high sides that will help keep the litter inside the box. One side is lower so your pet can enter easily, and it’s easy to clean. Another smart choice is our pick for the best value. The Frisco Open Top Cat Litter Box With Rim is inexpensive and has a removable lid that will help keep the litter inside the box. It features the same high-quality plastic as our top model and is easy to clean.
